Assam is famous for two river islands. Majuli is the largest and Umananda is smallest island in the world. Makuli is situated in the middle of river Brahmaputra. It is the centre of Vaishnava culture. The major satras or the Vaishnava monasteries like Kamalabari, Natun Kamalabari, Garmur, Samoguri, Auniati, Dakhinpat and Bengenaati are situated in Majuli. 

These satras are regarded as the main centres for Assamese art, music, dance, drama, handicrafts, literature and religion etc. Auniati is famous for its considerable collection of old Assamese utensils, jewellery and handicrafts.

The upper Majuli is inhabited by the tribes like the Mising and the Deoris. It is the centre of living heritage of colourful costumes and festivals. there are plenty of migratory birds of great verities.
