History

The ancient name of assam was Pragjyotishpura - the city of Eastern Light  which later was changed to Kamrup - the land where Kamdeva, thegod of love was re-born. The present name Assam or "Asom" an obvious reference to her undulating and uneven landscapeis relatively new.

She traces her history back to at least 2500 BC, when high civilisation flourished in the land. During Mahabharata era this land was ruled by NON-Aryans. The first known ruler of Assam was Mahiranga Danava of Danava dynsaty. Bhagadutta, son of Naraka who participated inthe great Kurukhetra War as an ally of the Kauravas, was the most powerful of all the Danava kins.

By the iddle of the 7th century A.D. the most illustrious monarch of Varmana dynasty Kumar bhaskar Varmana raised ancient Assam from obsurity ans placed her in the fore-front of Indian politics. Kumar Bhaskar Varmana was a great friend of king Harshvardhana.

During this period Chinese pilgrim Hiuen-Tsang  came to Assam and in his famous account "Si-Yu-Ki" he recored detail nores about Assam and her people.
